All In The Family - Part II

I        Just Because God Has Turned His Loving Attention To The Gentiles Does Not In Any Way Mean
That He Is No Longer Interested in The Jews.
1.        Every Jew Has Been Given An Opportunity To Believe And Be Saved As Much As Every Gentile.
2.        But Still The Question Lingers In The Minds Of The Jewish People…
3.        “Has Jehovah Forsaken His Promise To His Beloved, Whom He Has Promised To Love With An
Everlasting Love?” (See Jeremiah 31:3)
4.        Paul’s Answer To This Is, “By No Means!” (vs. 1)

II        Israel’s Rejection Of Christ Leaves A Remnant (11:1-6)
1.        Evidence That God Has Not Totally Forsaken The Jews…
•  I Am An Israelite Myself,
•  A Descendant Of Abraham,
•  From The Tribe Of Benjamin.
2.        Altho’ Israel Was Constantly Falling Into Disbelief And Sin, God Always Preserved A Remnant As
Witnessed By Elijah.
3.        But This Remnant Is Saved By God’s Grace (vs. 5), And Not By Works (vs. 6), Or Else It Would Not
Be Grace At All!
4.        11:7 Is A Simple Re-Statement Of 9:30-32.
30 What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a
righteousness that is by faith; 31 but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of
righteousness, have not attained their goal. 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it
were by works.

III        Israel’s National Rejection Made Way For The Gentiles To Be Saved (11:11-15)
•  Jews Have Not Fallen Beyond Recovery.
•  But As A Result, Provision Has Been Granted For Gentiles To Be Grafted In And Saved.

IV        The Wild Olive Branches (11:16-24)
1.   “You [Gentiles] Do Not Support the Root [Jews], But The Root [Jews] Support You [Gentiles].”
  Time Line Of God’s People.
2.   Israel Is The First-fruit And The Root Of God’s Salvation.
3.   Only Those Who Refused Faith, As Opposed To Works, Have Been Cut Off – So That Gentiles By
Faith Could Be Grafted In.
4.   Not All Branches Have Been Discarded.  Only Unrepentant Israel Has Been Broken Off.
5.   The Life Of The Tree Of Abraham Has Not Been Removed.
6.   The Wild Branches Gain Sustenance From The Root.
The History And Future Of Israel.
7.   Gentiles Must Never Forget That They Are Not The Natural Descendants of Abraham, But Have
Become Members Of God’s Family By Grace.
8.   Natural Branches Were Broken Off Because They Lacked The Only Ingredient That Would Bring
Them Life – Faith.

V        Israel’s Restoration Is Certain (11:25).  All Israel Will Be Saved (11:26)
1.   There Has Been No Casting Aside of Israel.  For When Their Eyes Are Finally Opened To Christ –
Then The Fullness Of The Gentiles Will Come.
2.   The Gift Of God – The Call Of God Is Irrevocable, i.e., It Cannot Be Undone.  Israel Is God’s
Chosen People, Always Will Be.  And We Are Grafted Into That Lineage!

All In The Family – Part I

Romans 8:14-17

I        14 Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God (8:14).
1.        Led ~ Greek ‘ago’ ~ driven by a force greater than ourselves.  Continuous action!
2.        21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This
is the way; walk in it” (Is. 30:21).

II        15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit
of sonship.  And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are
God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if
indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
1.        Made to be more than slaves… more than servants… but sons!
2.         Roman adoption was performed in accordance with– patria potestas –the father’s power over his
family.
3.        This power was absolute – even to life and death.
4.        There were two steps – the mancipatio and the vindicatio.
5.        Twice he was bought back displaying the father’s power over him…but third time not.

III        Four Consequences of Roman Adoption
1.        He lost all rights in his old family and gained all the rights of a fully legitimate son in his new family.
In the most literal sense, and in the most binding legal way, he got a new father!
2.        He became heir to his new father’s estate, equally with other sons who were blood relations.  He
became inalienably co-heirs with them!
3.        In law, the old life of the adopted son was completely wiped out.  Legally, all debts were canceled
as tho’ they had never been!
4.        In the eyes of the law, the adopted son was legally and absolutely the son of the new father!

IV        In verse 16, it is the Holy Spirit who declares us to be the sons of God.  He declares us to be heirs
of God.  He declares us to be joint-heirs with Christ.
1.        Verse 28 ~ He works all things to our good!  This is not a promise to the unbeliever, or to the world
at large; but to those who love Him, and who have been called by Him.
2.        Does not say that we will see it or understand it…but that He will do it = FAITH

V        Let’s Take Inventory…
1.          Adopted Us Into His Family.
2.          Made Us, Not Just Heirs, But Joint-Heirs w/Christ.
3.          God Makes All Things Work Together For Our Good.

VI        31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who
did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give
us all things?
1.        So significant was God’s love for us that He did not stop short of sacrificing His only begotten Son
to provide atonement for us.
2.        We let that thought slip too quickly from our minds.
3.        It isn’t even thinkable that He would fail to stand by us at this juncture!
4.        So…Can Anyone, or Any Power, Separate Us From God’s Love?
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or
nakedness or danger or sword?
36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be
slaughtered.”
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the
future, nor any powers,
39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of
God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
